What are the pros and cons of acid etching vs. diamond grinding vs. shot blasting?

Concrete prep is rated on a 1-to-10 scale called the Concrete Surface Profile. Acid etching scores a 1. Shot blasting hits a 3 to 5. That gap is the difference between a floor that lasts a lifetime and one that peels under your tires in a couple years.

The short answer

If you want a coated floor that’s going to last, shot blasting is the best prep method.

It gives you the deepest surface profile for the coating to bond to. It exposes the open pores in the concrete. It removes weak concrete and dust. And it treats high and low spots on the floor with the same effectiveness.

Diamond grinding has its place, and acid etching can work in narrow situations. But for a coated concrete floor that’s going to hold up under heavy use and last, shot blasting wins.

Here’s what each method actually does, what each one costs you in trade-offs, and where you should not do it yourself.

The keys to an awesome bond—pores or profile

I’m going to say something that might sound extreme: if you want a lifelong floor, the prep matters more than the coating that goes on top of it.

Concrete is very porous. You can think of it as a hard sponge. As concrete cures, the fine particles — what I call the “cream” — rise to the top and seal off the open pores underneath. (The technical name is laitance. I just find “cream” easier to picture.)

Good prep does two things:

  1. Removes the cream so the open pores are exposed.
  2. Creates a rough surface profile, or texture.

When the first coat goes down on a properly prepped floor, it saturates the surface and sends little fingers down into those open pores. The coating becomes one with the concrete. That’s the best form of adhesion you can get.

Sometimes, due to various reasons, the pores are closed instead of open. When this happens, the adhesion is entirely dependent on the profile. If the pores aren’t exposed and there’s no profile, the coating just lays on top of the concrete. Apply enough stress (say, vehicle tires turning on it) and it can peel right up. If you cannot achieve the open pores, the profile is a necessity!

It’s the same reason you sand wood before painting. You need texture for the paint to hang on to. Coatings are no different.

How each method works

Acid etching

You apply an acid to the concrete, let it react, then rinse it off. The acid eats away at the surface to expose the open pores and create a small profile.

No heavy equipment. That’s the big draw — it’s the only one of the three that’s even close to DIY-friendly.

Diamond grinding

A heavy floor grinder with rotating discs runs across the concrete. The discs are studded with synthetic industrial diamonds (not the kind you’d put in a ring — these are manufactured in a lab for this purpose). Think of it like sanding wood, except the sandpaper is metal discs with diamonds.

The grinder needs to be hooked up to an industrial vacuum to handle the dust.

Shot blasting

A shot blaster throws small metal BBs (“shot”) at the concrete at high speed. The shot chips away at the surface, knocking out weak concrete and exposing the pores. A vacuum sucks up the concrete dust along with the shot, then separates the two and recycles the shot back into the machine.

It also needs heavy equipment and an industrial vacuum.

What’s a CSP profile?

The International Concrete Repair Institute uses a scale from 1 to 10 to measure the surface profile of prepped concrete. The number measures the distance between the peaks and valleys of the texture.

It’s standard lingo in the construction industry. When we bid a job, the specs will often say something like “concrete needs to be prepared to a CSP 3 profile.”

Here’s where each method lands:

  • Acid etching: CSP 1
  • Diamond grinding: CSP 2, sometimes 3
  • Shot blasting: CSP 3 to 5 (depending on how aggressively it’s done)

Pros and cons of each method

Acid etching

What it gives you:

  • The lowest cost of the three
  • A method you can do yourself with no heavy equipment
  • Better adhesion than just cleaning the concrete (which is what a lot of box-store kits recommend)

What it costs you:

  • The smallest surface profile of the three (CSP 1)
  • It won’t work on concrete with a sealer on it
  • It won’t work over oil or previous coatings
  • The concrete has to be bare and clean for it to do anything at all

Acid etching does save money. But it’s a gamble. If the concrete has a sealer you didn’t know about, you’ve just wasted your time and money.

What it gives you:

  • A smooth, flatter floor
  • The right prep when you’re applying clear coatings or very thin coatings (where the visible lines from shot blasting would show through)
  • A useful first step when there’s a previous coating or glue residue that has to come off before re-prepping with another method

What it costs you:

  • A low surface profile (CSP 2, sometimes 3)
  • It hits the high spots hard and misses the low spots — no floor is perfectly flat, and the grinder can’t reach the dips
  • It pushes concrete dust back into the pores instead of pulling it out
  • It doesn’t remove weak concrete

Diamond grinding isn’t bad. It has a place. But it isn’t the prep of choice for most floor coatings.

We’ve seen this on our own jobs. On one of them (a clear coating going over very hard, slightly uneven concrete) it was obvious how much the grinder was missing the low spots, even though we are sticklers about removing all the cream from the high spots.

Shot blasting

What it gives you:

  • The best surface profile of the three (CSP 3 to 5)
  • It removes weak concrete that other methods would just coat over
  • It treats high and low spots equally
  • It pulls dust up and out instead of pushing it down

What it costs you:

  • It can leave visible lines on the surface, often called “corn rows.” Most people find them visually undesirable, which is why shot blasting isn’t a good fit for clear or very thin coatings where you’d see them through the top coat.

A story that explains why this matters

We were brought in to redo a floor that another company had installed. They’d prepped it with a diamond grinder. When we got into it, there was concrete dust under the coating, and the coating came up in sheets.

That’s a terrible bond. The coating never had a chance to actually adhere to the concrete because there was a layer of dust between them.

Diamond grinding has its place. But it has to be done deep enough, and all the dust has to be vacuumed out before the first coat goes down. If either of those gets skipped, the floor fails.

We’ve also seen shot blasting catch problems that a diamond grinder would have hidden — like weak concrete patch repairs. A shot blaster reveals and removes those areas when the bond isn’t good. A diamond grinder would just glide over the top and you’d never know there was a problem with the substrate.

Can you DIY any of this?

Honest answer: not really.

I don’t consider any part of a floor coating job DIY-friendly. The prep is the most important step, and homeowners don’t have easy access to the equipment to do it right.

The one method you can do yourself is acid etching. But like I said earlier, it’s a gamble.

  • If there’s a sealer on the concrete, the acid won’t do anything.
  • If there’s oil or a previous coating, same problem.
  • The concrete has to be bare and clean to start with.

Acid etching is still better than just cleaning the floor, which is what a lot of box-store coating kits will tell you is enough prep. (It isn’t.) But if your DIY coating starts to peel a year or two later, it costs more to have a company strip it and redo the whole job from scratch than it would have cost to do it right the first time.

What about buying just the coatings?

People sometimes call and ask if they can buy the coatings from us and apply them themselves. The answer is no.

The products we work with are commercial-grade and they aren’t DIY-friendly. They need specific equipment, specific training, and specific conditions to apply correctly. The stuff at the box stores is made for homeowners. It has longer cure times and is more forgiving. Our products aren’t.

What to ask if you hire a coating company

The number one question to ask any floor coating company: how many years they’ve been in business.

Companies in this industry come and go all the time. I recommend hiring an installer with no less than 5 years of experience, and preferably 10. If a company is offering a 15-year warranty but has only been in business for 3 years, ask yourself: what are the odds they’ll still exist when you have a problem?

One day garage floor comparison

One-day garage floor companies typically use diamond grinding for prep, then put down two thin coats. They often advertise long warranties. Sometimes even lifetime.

Our process is different. We prep with shot blasting and apply 3 to 5 coats over the course of about a week (4 coats is the most common). It costs more. And there’s a real reason for that.

Here’s the difference that shows up years down the road:

  • One-day system: If you ever want to change the color or refresh the surface, the existing coating has to come off and a new one has to go down from scratch.
  • A well-prepped, multi-coat system: If you want to refresh or change the color, you can clean the existing floor, lightly sand the top coat, and apply a new coat over it. No tear-out.

That’s only possible if the bond at the base is solid. Which goes right back to prep.

Where to save money and where not to

If you’re working with a tight budget but you want a coating that lasts, here’s my honest advice:

  • Spend the money on good prep and a good primer for the base coat.
  • You don’t have to get the prettiest, most decorative floor right away. You can come back and add a decorative top coat later.
  • What you can’t do later is fix bad prep. If the base coat fails, the whole floor has to come up.

A solid base is the best investment of your money. The pretty stuff can come later.

What to do next

If you’re getting quotes from coating companies, here are three questions to ask before you sign anything:

  1. How long have you been in business?
  2. What prep method do you use, and why?
  3. Can the floor be recoated later, or does the whole thing have to be replaced?

If the answers feel vague, slow down. A floor coating is supposed to last for decades. Take the time to pick a company that’s going to be around if you ever need them.
